In his new role as the “Digital Quartermaster” Ron Roozendaal is asking for suggestions and ideas as input for discussion. At Exergy we consider these questions on a daily basis, and we have produced a number of relevant blogs and articles.
To kick-start a discussion, we propose the following seeds of ideas:
- Energy companies — like Liander and Vattenfall — are asked to add more renewable sources of energy to the grid. These sources — wind, solar — are more variable than traditional coal, gas or nuclear plants, which complicates the balancing of demand and supply. How can we organize the national energy system such that data centers — like the 200 MW one planned by Facebook/Meta in Zeewolde — form an active part of demand management, e.g. by providing dynamic on-demand load on request?
- Heat reuse is a key mechanism through which CO2 emissions can be reduced. What if we repurpose Open Compute Platform (OCP) servers from hyper-scale data centers as heat/compute elements?
